Names In The News

Late A's play-by-play man BILL KING yesterday was "named the winner" of the '17 Ford C. Frick Award after "finishing as a finalist for the honor seven times." Current A's play-by-play man KEN KORACH "played a pivotal role championing King’s candidacy." Korach: "It’s really emotional. This is going to be such a wonderful celebration for A’s fans and that’s the definition of a Hall of Famer -- someone who had that kind of impact on so many people" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 12/8). King died in '05. Those who "knew him best understand how much this honor would have meant to him" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 12/8).  Meanwhile, CLAIRE SMITH, who on Tuesday became the first female to be honored with the Spink Award, said her gender gave her a harder time breaking in as a baseball writer than her race. She said, "I've always said that because a sport had, at that time, a much larger representation of African-Americans in uniform … it would be very hard to be overtly racist towards anyone in a clubhouse. However, it's still very easy to be an idiot" ("NewsHour,” PBS, 12/7).
