Mets Looking To Shed Payroll Before Opening Day After Yoenis Cespedes Deal

The Mets' projected Opening Day payroll is more than $150M after re-signing LF Yoenis Cespedes last week, but Mets GM Sandy Alderson yesterday indicated that it will "not be that high when the season starts," according to Kristie Ackert of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. The Mets will not spend "any more money this winter until they can free up some payroll space by making a trade." Sources said that their payroll "needs to be right around" $140M on Opening Day. The sources added that Alderson is "trying to get creative when addressing needs on a zero budget." Three agents who met with the Mets this week "described the team as adamant about not adding salary" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 12/8). ESPN N.Y.'s Adam Rubin notes Alderson insisted the reasoning for trying to trade either RF Jay Bruce or RF Curtis Granderson "is a surplus of corner outfielders, not primarily fueled by shedding payroll." He said, "It has more to do with playing time than anything else." Bruce is slated to make $13M in '17, while Granderson will earn $15M (ESPNNY.com, 12/8). In Newark, Maria Guardado notes Alderson "isn't sure where the Mets' payroll will ultimately end up" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 12/8).

NO DEADLINE TO DEAL
: SNY's Jonas Schwartz noted the Mets had "designs on making a splash" during the Winter Meetings, but "nothing really has happened." The N.Y. Daily News’ John Harper said the Mets are looking to trade RF Jay Bruce and “they’re going to be patient.” N.Y. Daily News’ Andy Martino added the Mets are “under no sense of a deadline of having to do something before they leave the meetings” (“Daily News Live,” SNY, 12/7).
