Kentucky Gov. Says City Of Louisville To Carry Most Of Debt In Yum! Center Restructure

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin yesterday said that the city of Louisville will "have to carry the heaviest financial burden in restructuring the KFC Yum! Center’s debt plan," according to Phillip Bailey of the Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL. Speaking to Louisville-based WHAS-AM, Bevin said that the downtown arena is "connected to the state's economic well-being but that he wanted to see how the negotiations between the arena’s partners played out." Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer's office has not yet responded to the governor's statements. But in a previous statement, Fischer said the city, state and Univ. of Louisville "share a desire to have a financially successful Yum Center and are working toward that goal." Bevin’s comments come a day after UL AD Tom Jurich "threatened to abandon the Yum Center days after some city leaders slammed the arena’s lease agreement as favoring the university." Under the lease agreement signed by UL, the men's and women's basketball teams have "committed to playing at least 22 more regular seasons in the arena" (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 12/8).
