Bigger Than Sports: Bay Area Teams Pledge Donations To Oakland Fire Victims

The Warriors on Saturday announced that they will "donate $50,000 to support those impacted by the deadly Oakland warehouse fire that took place late Friday night." The donation will be "made to the Unity Council, stationed in the Fruitvale district of Oakland, which is where the fire occurred" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 12/4). The Raiders and A's also "pledged to match donations from fans up to $30,000" to the United Council (ESPN.com, 12/3).

GIVING BACK: Patriots Owner ROBERT KRAFT donated $100,000 to Haley House, a Boston nonprofit "providing food, housing, and employment to people struggling with poverty and homelessness, to support the organization’s second social enterprise restaurant, Dudley Dough" (BOSTON GLOBE, 12/5)....Redskins QB KIRK COUSINS last week made his first appearance as the face of Virginia's new "Phones Down Touchdown" campaign, which "aims to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving." Cousins said that he "agreed to help with the campaign partly in reaction to the death of fellow Michigan State alum MIKE SADLER," a former MSU punter who was killed in a car accident in July (FAIRFAX COUNTY TIMES, 12/2)....More than 60 Univ. of Tennessee athletes on Friday delivered supplies and met with evacuated residents in the wildfire-ravaged town of Gatlinburg, Tenn. (Knoxville NEWS SENTINEL, 12/4).

HERE TO HELP: MLB and its affiliates will "auction memorabilia and experiences during the winter meetings to help fund" Shannon Forde Field in Little Falls, N.J., in memory of the late Mets Senior Media Relations Dir. All 30 teams will participate in the auction. Forde "died in March at age 44 from breast cancer" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 12/5)....Celtics players last week "stopped by Boston Children’s Hospital to visit with patients and deliver a few holiday surprises" (BOSTONGLOBE.com, 12/3)....Fifteen Ravens players on Friday participated in their teammates' Celebrity Bowling Night, where they "greeted guests, shook hands and posed for pictures at a fundraiser for a United Way holiday toy drive and a player's charity" (TOWSON TIMES, 12/4)....Kings C DEMARCUS COUSINS flew a Sacramento family to N.Y. for the weekend and surprised them with a "shopping spree at the NBA Store on Fifth Avenue." The family was also Cousins' guests at the Kings' game against the Knicks at MSG yesterday (SACRAMENTO BEE, 12/4).
