NFL Could Add Gameday Video On Sideline Tablets, Perhaps Without Coaches' Blessing

While some NFL coaches "resisted moves to make game-day video available on the sideline tablets they now use to [study] plays and formations, the matter will be discussed again at the spring meetings ... as the league continues to push to be at the forefront of technology," according to sources cited by Jason La Canfora of CBSSPORTS.com. A league source said that it is "not out of the question the matter could be brought to a vote at a time when the coaches are not present" (CBSSPORTS.com, 12/4).

FIXER UPPER: In DC, Mark Maske wrote the NFL's instant replay system is "broken" and a hit on Vikings QB Sam Bradford last Thursday "demonstrates that yet again." Perhaps the answer is an "overhaul of the challenge system, and empowering a replay official to review a wider range of missed calls at his discretion." Maybe the answer is "making prospective game-changing plays such as illegal hits, other personal fouls and pass interference subject to replay review." Whatever it is, the NFL "needs to find some solutions," as the its officiating problem is "not going away" (WASHINGTON POST, 12/3). USA TODAY's Tom Pelissero asked, "How much longer can the NFL push back at the idea of allowing plays like this -- specifically, called or uncalled penalties at critical junctures of the game -- to be subject to replay review, allowing officials and the league office to get it right based on the same video 66,860 fans in the stadium and millions more at home get to see almost instantly?" Pelissero: "But in a high-leverage situation, in a game with playoff implications, on national TV no less, wouldn't it make sense to have some mechanism to correct a seemingly obvious error?" (USATODAY.com, 12/2).
