Sources: NBA Likely To Move Up Season Openers As Part Of New CBA

The NBA remains "on course" to announce a new CBA with the NBPA between now and Dec. 15, as details of what the new pact contains "continue to dribble out slowly," according to Marc Stein of ESPN.com. Sources said that there is a "strong likelihood" that the start of the '17-18 season will be "moved up a week to 10 days, which is yet another measure aimed at reducing the number of back-to-backs teams face over the course of 82 games." Sources added that opening night next season is "likely to fall in the Oct. 15-20 range, which would be achieved by shortening the preseason schedule from its longstanding eight-game max per team to five or six exhibition games" (ESPN.com, 12/2). In Phoenix, Dan Bickley wrote the concept of NBA "super teams" is the "worst thing that could happen” to the league. It is a “dreadful trend for a league that is struggling with parity, where maybe four teams have a legitimate shot at winning a championship this season.” Bickley: “And that’s being generous.” The NBA “suffers because its star players are clustered in a handful of desirable locations, and not spread evenly throughout the league.” It “hurts the overall appeal of the NBA schedule, and how many games fans will consume" on TV. It also makes small-market teams "even less relevant." The NBA is “cognizant of the problem, and the league has tried to promote parity through collective bargaining measures," but "nothing seems to be working" (AZCENTRAL.com, 12/3).
