Ronnie Lott Optimistic About Working Stadium Deal For Current Coliseum Site In Oakland

Pro Football HOFer Ronnie Lott "remains optimistic" that he and his Raiders stadium group can "manage to wrestle down a workable deal" on the current Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum property, according to Mark Purdy of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. Lott also thinks the NFL "will be supportive of such a project." Lott has "spoken with top-level NFL executives," including Commissioner Roger Goodell, who are "encouraging him in his efforts." Lott said, "What they’ve said to me is, ‘We believe this is a great opportunity in Oakland. What they’ve said is, ‘We want healthy teams to succeed in their communities.'" Lott said that the public will "have a look at the proposed deal soon enough." Meanwhile, Lott has been "engaging in shuttle diplomacy" as he has joined Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf in meetings "not just with the council and supervisors, but with East Bay labor unions." Purdy noted the NFL is "currently conducting market studies of both the Bay Area and Southern Nevada to assist the owners in their choice," which Lott has "spoken with league executives about" as well. Lott: "I do know they understand that the Bay Area is a better market than Las Vegas" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 12/3). Purdy wrote at a time when transparency is needed, Schaaf has been "trying to keep as many details about any Raiders stadium deal as secret as possible." There is "no way the East Bay public can support the efforts" to retain the Raiders "unless the public knows exactly what the terms are and has enough time to digest them." Purdy: "And by 'enough time,' I mean more than a few days" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 12/2).

STRONG SUPPORT FOR OAKLAND? CBSSPORTS.com's Jason La Canfora cited sources as saying that the league office "continues to maintain strong support for keeping the Raiders in Oakland and will extol the merits of that market at an upcoming NFL meeting in Dallas." Whether Raiders Owner Mark Davis has the 24 votes necessary to "secure a move from the Bay Area is a matter of debate." Several ownership sources "indicated they expect the NFL to do what it can to can to slow play any move to Vegas" (CBSSPORTS.com, 12/4). In Boston, Ben Volin wrote Davis "doesn’t seem to care" about Lott and his group's plans. Davis "looks like a guy who wants to move his team to Vegas, approval or not." Volin: "He certainly has it in his bloodlines (BOSTON GLOBE, 12/4).
