CBS Reaches Deal To Stream NFL Games On Its All Access OTT Service Beginning Sunday

CBS has "struck a deal with the NFL" to stream its coverage of games on its CBS All Access OTT subscription service beginning Sunday, according to John Koblin of the N.Y. TIMES. CBS All Access subscribers will be "able to stream the game that is being broadcast by their local CBS affiliate, as well as playoff games and several of next year’s Thursday night NFL games." Koblin writes the deal "is a boon" for CBS' $6-a-month app. The NFL, which has "seen steep ratings declines in prime-time games this season, has been toying with various digital experiments recently." Earlier this year, the league signed a deal with Twitter to live stream its "TNF" games (N.Y. TIMES, 12/2). The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Joe Flint notes the pact is "separate from CBS’s current broadcast rights deal with the NFL." CBS has "long sought rights to stream the NFL on All Access, which has about one million subscribers." Not having the NFL was "seen as limiting subscriber interest in the service." Like other networks with NFL rights, CBS "already had rights to offer NFL games online to consumers who have pay-TV subscriptions." However, this is the "first time the NFL has given a TV rights holder streaming rights for a stand-alone service outside of the traditional pay-TV realm" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 12/2). VARIETY's Brian Steinberg wrote the deal "marks a coup for CBS, which has been in discussions to gain rights to live-stream the games" since it launched All Access in October '14 (VARIETY.com, 12/1). In L.A., Meg James notes CBS subscribers "still will not be able to watch their favorite teams on their mobile phones unless they have signed up for the NFL mobile app provided by Verizon" (L.A. TIMES, 12/2).
