Sources: Chargers Expected To Exercise Team Option To Move North To L.A. In '17

The Chargers in January will announce "plans to relocate" to L.A. barring an "unanticipated miracle," according to ESPN's Jim Trotter (TWITTER.com, 12/1). ESPN.com's Eric Williams noted the Chargers were "granted the option to relocate to L.A. with a deadline of Jan. 15, 2017." Chargers Chair Dean Spanos has to "alert the league that he intends to exercise that option by next month's deadline." The Chargers received only 43% approval on their stadium initiative for San Diego in November. The Chargers have a "tenant-lease agreement" with Rams Owner Stan Kroenke that "lowers the team's risk because they do not have to borrow money for construction" of the $2.6B project. The Rams and Chargers would "jointly share revenue such as naming rights, suites, sponsors and advertising." The teams would be "on their own to sell season tickets and personal seat licenses." Kroenke has "motivation to complete a deal with the Chargers, because he cannot begin selling personal seat licenses until reaching a decision on whether the Chargers or Raiders will relocate" (ESPN.com, 12/1). In San Diego, Tom Krasovic notes the Chargers would "need a temporary home until the stadium is built." StubHub Center in Carson and the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, which is home to USC and the Rams, have "received publicity as potential temporary options." As the NFL looks to put "heat on San Diego politicians to come up with a stadium subsidy that Spanos likes, one question to consider is this one: would the NFL be better off with the Chargers in Los Angeles and the Raiders in Las Vegas?" Offering another perk, San Diego is the NFL market "closest to Mexico, a country the League has targeted as part of its international plan" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 12/2).
