In Nashville, Jacob Steimer noted the Predators this season will spend about $68M on "paying its players." Chair Tom Cigarran said spending that amount would have been "inconceivable" when he when he joined the franchise in '10. He said that it was only possible because the franchise has "poured most of its increased revenue from the past five years into its players." He added that the organization has "four locations in mind for the team's next ice rink," though he "didn't say specific locations" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 11/28). 

NAME DROP: In North Carolina, Steve DeVane noted the Vegas Golden Knights have "caught the attention of Army officials because of the parachute team that goes by the same name." Army Marketing and Research Group spokesperson Alison Bettencourt said that the group "learned of the NHL team's name through media accounts" last Wednesday. Bettencourt: "We're reviewing the situation and figuring out what the way ahead would be. ... We understand that one of the Las Vegas team owners has Army connections, and will likely understand our interest in this announcement is meant to protect the proud history of the Army's Golden Knights" (FAYETTEVILLE OBSERVER, 11/28). 

RISE UP: In Phoenix, Alejandro Barahona notes USL Arizona United SC owners yesterday revealed a "new team name, a new logo and plans for a 5,000-seat privately financed stadium on the Salt River Reservation" for the '17 season. Co-Owner Berke Bakay yesterday said that the club has "been rebranded as Phoenix Rising FC." The stadium will be "built in collaboration with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the Solanna Group." Bakay said that the project is "expected to be ready when the season begins in March." Meanwhile, Phoenix Rising FC's new owners include Dodgers P Brandon McCarthy, recording artist Diplo and Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 11/29).
