Theo Epstein, Cubs' Win Large Focus Of Late-Night Talk Show Monologues

The Cubs’ historic World Series win and team President of Baseball Operations THEO EPSTEIN’s construction of the club got plenty of play on the late-night talk shows on Thursday. CBS’ Stephen Colbert noted Epstein was one of the “major reasons the Cubs won” and he now “owns the title of world’s most famous Theo.” Colbert: “Sorry, MALCOLM-JAMAL WARNER, you had a good run.” He added, “At the age of 28, Epstein became the Red Sox general manager and gave them a World Series title, breaking the Curse of the Bambino, which, if you're not familiar with sports, is when BABE RUTH dumped a bunch of tea into Boston harbor. … Then Epstein moved onto the Chicago Cubs, giving them their first World Series victory in 108 years, destroying the Curse of the Billy Goat and the less famous Curse of Just Sucking” (“The Late Show,” CBS, 11/3). NBC’s Jimmy Fallon noted after ending World Series droughts for both the Cubs and Red Sox, Epstein now is “going to take on his toughest job yet: President of Radio Shack.” Fallon: “Theo Epstein said last night that he’s going on a month-long bender to celebrate. Then HILLARY (CLINTON) said, ‘If you can wait five more days, I’ll join you’” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 11/3). ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel said Epstein should get “a lot of the credit” for the Cubs’ win. Kimmel: “For a man who is so good at busting curses, you would think he’d know not to bust a curse out on live TV.” The broadcast aired footage of Epstein cursing during a live interview, with Kimmel adding, “Go wash your mouth out with champagne” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 11/3).

ONE PARTING SHOT: Comedy Central’s Trevor Noah discussed the Cubs' World Series win on Thursday's episode of "The Daily Show" and said, “I do feel bad for the Indians, though. Defeated on their own land again. Although most Native Americans are probably okay that (the Chief Wahoo logo) lost. This shit needs to change” (“The Daily Show,” Comedy Central, 11/3).
