Chargers Equip Volunteers With Special App To Help Persuade Voters On Stadium Measure

The Chargers have "equipped people going door-to-door with a special smart phone app that targets the households of likely supporters and others that internal polling shows could be persuaded to vote yes" on the stadium initiative on the Nov. 8 ballot, according to David Garrick of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. A campaign official said that "more than 2,000 people have been trained on the app and a set of talking points to use with voters who express opposition or say they are undecided for various reasons." Members of Chargers fan groups "have also visited voters door to door when they have time, and the Chargers have hired 15 professionals who visit voters" from roughly 4:00-8:00pm PT "every weekday and nearly all day on weekends." Visiting voters at home is "in addition to millions the Chargers have spent on TV ads, radio spots and social media efforts in support of Measure C." Polling has "consistently shown the measure has almost no chance to reach the two-thirds voter support required for approval, but there’s hope from supporters that a robust campaign could push it above" 50% (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 11/3).

EDGE OF SEVENTEEN: In San Diego, Tom Krasovic notes if Measure C is voted down, a template for a new stadium plan "could be the agreement reached" between Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Chargers Chair Dean Spanos. Terms between Faulconer and Spanos "are non-binding." A "logical step would be to codify the terms" into a '17 initiative. Moving the stadium initiative to '17, it "might be argued, would allow a more effective vetting of what are complicated issues while providing legal cover on the Faulconer-Spanos pact" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 11/2).
