John McEnroe Unhappy With Nike Over Perceived Lack Of Tennis Commercials

John McEnroe during a visit to Oregon this week "may make mention to Nike officials" about what he claims to be a lack of tennis commercials from the brand, according to Kerry Eggers of the PORTLAND TRIBUNE. McEnroe, who is competing in Friday's PowerShares Champions Challenge exhibition in Portland, said, "We used to do some great Nike television commercials. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a tennis commercial." He said, "Nike has (Rafael) Nadal, (Roger) Federer, Serena (Williams) -- some of the sport’s biggest names. It would be nice if Nike was still doing (commercials)." McEnroe: "That’s part of the sport’s problem. We need to get out there and get ahead of the game again." Eggers notes Nike co-Founder & Chair Emeritus Phil Knight over time has "stayed loyal to McEnroe despite criticism of the player’s on-court deportment at times through his playing career." McEnroe said, "Phil is nice enough to keep me on board. Early on in my career, when I was getting a lot of grief for my behavior -- some of it deserved, some of it not -- Phil would call me and say, 'Keep doing what you’re doing. I love it.' It was nice to get that support from somebody like Phil when you’re having a tough time" (PORTLAND TRIBUNE, 11/2).
