Facebook Looks To Broadcast E-Sports Events As Means To Boost Streaming Service

Facebook is "stepping up plans to broadcast popular e-sports tournaments, in a potential challenge to Twitch and YouTube," according to Corey Weinsberg of THE INFORMATION. Super Evil Megacorp COO Kristian Segerstrale said that Facebook has had talks with the developer of mobile e-sport “Vainglory” to "stream professional competitions, although no deal is imminent." The talks come after Facebook "started working with game developer Activision Blizzard in May to stream some tournaments and highlight shows." Sources said that discussions with Activision also "have progressed, and Facebook could pay for more streaming rights to professional matches." Paying for rights to stream premium competitions "could shake up the market by creating new TV-like revenue streams for e-sports." Weinsberg notes Facebook has "had its sights set on e-sports for a while as it's looked for content to propel its Facebook Live streaming video service." Meanwhile, Facebook has "added e-sports players to its ranks." The company in May hired former pro gamer Stephen Ellis to "manage partnership deals with e-sports companies" (THEINFORMATION.com, 11/1).
