Minding My Business With AMB Sports & Entertainment Senior VP Mike Gomes

Name: Mike Gomes

Position: AMB Sports & Entertainment Senior VP/Fan Experience

Where I’m from: Pawtucket, R.I.

Where I call home: Atlanta

Focusing on right now: The Falcons season. I’m also certainly keeping an eye toward our exciting new stadium coming out of the ground that will open next year.

Best advice: You need to think about something from other people’s points of view. Whether that’s where I sit now, thinking about a fan’s motivation or needs or whether I’m working with colleagues and trying to figure out the best solution, understanding what their motivations and what their issues are.

A must for a new hire: I like to encourage new hires to be inquisitive. Yes, they have their job. They have their role. They need to focus on that, but at the same time, don’t be afraid to ask questions. That’s a great way to learn and gain insight from those with experience.

Person I admire the most: Disneyland President MICHAEL COLGLAZIER. I worked with him for two different stints for about nine or 10 years, and he taught me more than I ever really knew I could learn quite frankly.

Best book I’ve read this year: I have a fascination with the founding of our country. Whether it’s a biography on the individuals who we all know as founding fathers or the revolutionary acts in New England and Virginia. I’ve read so many books on that topic that I probably can’t point to one in particular.

First thing in the morning: I grab my phone. Not necessarily to do work and read emails, but it may be to read the news. I start consuming from the moment I wake up.

Talking tech: From our stadium perspective, the most evident and obvious piece of technology is the largest videoboard that’s ever been built. It’s what we call our “halo board.” It is 58 feet high, which makes it a five story building in height, but it’s not a rectangular board. It is 1,100 linear feet around.

Must-have music: I probably have music playing in my head or around me almost the entire time I’m awake. From a must-have standpoint, I’d probably have to say DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, and it has to be live. I’ve seen them live nearly 40 times, including three times this summer.

Food for thought: Give me wings or a pizza and a burger. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy sushi or going out to eat for a nicer meal, but I’m simple in that regard.

Day in the life: It is not an exaggeration to say that no two days are ever alike. I could be at our Falcons practice facility. I could be at our new stadium’s construction trailers. I could be at our corporate office. I could be focusing on what we’re doing for this week’s game in the Georgia Dome, and right after that I could be in a meeting about new video capabilities we're going to implement in our new stadium.
