Technology At Pacers' Bankers Life Fieldhouse To Help Fans With Concession, Restroom Lines

The Pacers open their season tonight against the Mavericks, and WaitTime technology, a system that takes 10 pictures per second and places cameras at all points of sale in the arena, will be "up and running" in Bankers Life Fieldhouse, according to Dana Hunsinger Benbow of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR. The technology uses artificial intelligence to "determine not only how many people are waiting in that line, but how long it takes to get to the counter and receive the order." The information will be "displayed on monitors" throughout the arena, and fans can "access the data on their phones with the Pacers' mobile app." The Pacers "know fans will get to take in more of the game they came to see if they can be directed to lines at concession stands and restrooms that are the shortest." Pacers Sports & Entertainment CTO Ed Frederici said, "We want everybody to enjoy the event they are there to enjoy. Waiting in line isn't part of that." The initial cost for the Pacers to "launch WaitTime was $150,000, then the team will pay about $9,000 a month to keep it running." The data from WaitTime will "not only be shared in real time with fans but with Pacers officials and Levy Restaurants," the concessionaire at Bankers Life. The Pacers also have the option to "sell ad space on WaitTime monitors." The team is the "second in the NBA to use WaitTime." The Pistons, Red Wings and Lions each served as "pilot teams for the technology" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 10/25).
