NBA Season Preview

Cavs Receive Heaviest NBA Championship Rings Of All Time Ahead Of Season Opener

The Cavaliers last night received their NBA Finals championship rings, which were approximately 6.5 carats and encrusted with over 400 diamonds, making them the heaviest NBA Championship rings ever made. Each ring is set in 10K white gold and 14K yellow gold. The phrase “World Champions” is displayed along the top and bottom bezel. Each letter is framed in diamonds, using a total of 216 diamonds to represent Cleveland’s area code, as well as a nod to the popular “All In to 16” motto. The Cavs' “C” logo is comprised of custom cut dark garnet that wraps around the Larry O’Brien trophy, also made in 14K yellow gold. A one carat diamond sits atop the trophy to represent the team’s first-ever NBA championship. Meanwhile, cascading the right and left edges are 46 diamonds (23 per side) which represent the 46 years that the Cavs organization has been in existence (Cavs). In Cleveland, Joe Vardon notes Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert "purchased championship rings for more than 2,000 employees -- everyone from arena security guards to hot dog vendors." The rings going to Cavs employees "aren't here yet, and they aren't the 10K white gold, 14K yellow gold rings the players, coaches, and front office executive received" last night. But they will have, in the coming weeks, a "piece of history nonetheless" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 10/26).

THROUGH THICK & THIN: Gilbert yesterday appeared on ESPN Radio 850 Cleveland with Tony Rizzo and Je'Rod Cherry said that he and F LeBron James have "come a long way in the six years since James decided to bolt for Miami." Gilbert: "Everybody learns every day in the decisions they make and the things they do." Gilbert said of his meetings with James, which often also include James' agent and Klutch Sports Group Founder Rich Paul, as well as Cavs minority Owners Jeff Cohen and Nate Forbes, "It's really a partnership when you think about it." James said that the partnership "extends to off-court projects as well" (ESPN.com, 10/25).
