ESPN Has Lowest Week 7 "MNF" Audience Since '12; Pundits Continue Look At NFL Drop

ESPN drew 11.17 million viewers for the Broncos' 27-9 win over the Texans on "MNF," marking the lowest audience for a Week 7 "MNF" telecast since '12, when Lions-Bears drew 10.66 million viewers up against Giants-Cardinals NLCS Game 7. Texans-Broncos had no MLB competition on Monday and delivered ESPN a primetime win among all nets. Monday's game was down 8% from 12.2 million viewers for Ravens-Cardinals in Week 7 last year (Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor).

CHANCE FOR A CHANGE: In N.Y., Bart Hubbuch writes the NFL's TV ratings decline "continues to show no signs of letting up." However, this weekend's slate of games "should make it easier" for Commissioner Roger Goodell and the league to "know whether it's time to push the panic button." The 5-1 Cowboys -- "always a rating star -- play host to the 4-2 Eagles in a traditional NFC East rivalry game" on "SNF" (N.Y. POST, 10/26).

BLIP ON THE RADAR? In L.A., Stephen Battaglio notes "no one is more eager" for Election Day than TV execs who "do business with the NFL." Whether Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump occupies the White House "won't make a difference as to who makes it to the Super Bowl," but it will "go along way to explaining whether the NFL ratings downturn this season is a temporary blip or a game-changer in the TV business." Wall Street analysts who follow CBS, NBC, Fox and ESPN's parent companies have "raised concerns about whether the decline becomes a long-term trend" (L.A. TIMES, 10/26).

BUCKING THE TREND: In Indianapolis, Anthony Schoettle noted the 2-4 Colts have "escaped" the NFL's ratings hit, as the team through the first five weeks of the season has seen its local ratings increase 2% over last year. Ratings were up for "each of the Colts' first four games," although their fifth "showed a slight decline." The Colts are averaging a 32.2 local rating in Indianapolis, an increase that "follows a small decline" last year over '14 (IBJ.com, 10/22).
