NBA Season Preview

NBA Set For Big Season On Television With Start Of New Deals, Presence Of

It will be "fascinating to see what kind of viewership" the NBA gets during the early part of the '16-17 season, which tips off tonight, amid the NFL's continued ratings drop this year, according to Richard Deitsch of SI.com. Networks "love super teams and star power -- and they particularly like polarizing teams." The Warriors were "far and away the league’s most popular television draw" last season, being a part of seven of the 10 most-watched games during the regular season. Their addition of F Kevin Durant will be "discussed, debated and dissected throughout the season." The Warriors last season "made 30 appearances combined across ABC, ESPN, and TNT, exceeding the contractual 25-game cap for those networks," and "more of the same this year" seems likely. This season is the "start of a nine-year media-rights extension that the NBA signed with ESPN and Turner" in '14, and the biggest change was the "addition of more games." ESPN and ABC feature "more than 100 regular-season games, the most ever for the network." ESPN will "air 82 games (up from 70), including doubleheaders on Wednesday and Friday nights," while ABC will "air 19 games as part of an NBA Saturday Primetime show in addition to its Sunday Showcase." From January to April, ABC and ESPN will "combine to televise NBA games four days per week." TNT will "increase the number of regular season games to 64 from 52 while NBA TV will air over 100 regular-season games, an increase from 96." Turner in January will debut a "new Monday night package, which is expected to be in the neighborhood of 12 games." The "Inside The NBA" team of Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith will be "part of those nights" (SI.com, 10/23).

BOUNCE PASS: MULTICHANNEL NEWS' Jeff Baumgartner reported NBA League Pass is "launching a new mobile-optimized component" for the '16-17 season. Looking to optimize delivery of games for smaller screens, NBA Mobile View will "provide a 'zoomed-in, tighter shot' of the action." The feature will debut today as "part of the NBA League Pass preview, which runs through Nov. 1." When fans "select any game on NBA League Pass, NBA Mobile View will appear as an additional streaming option." NBA Mobile View was "developed by the NBA and Turner Sports via their NBA Digital partnership, and was created by installing new cameras in all 29 NBA arenas." Each game will "have a designated producer assigned for the NBA Mobile View feature" (MULTICHANNEL.com, 10/24).
