Celtics Break Ground On New Practice Facility Named After Late HOFer Red Auerbach

The Celtics yesterday broke ground on their new Boston practice facility, the Auerbach Center at New Balance World Headquarters, and the venue is "scheduled to open" in the summer of '18, according to Gary Washburn of the BOSTON GLOBE. The Celtics "plan to build an expansive and state-of-the-art practice facility to become another free-agent attraction and haven for their current players." Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and Lieutenant Gov. Karyn Polito were "among those in attendance." Celtics President Rich Gotham said, "The fact that it’s been named after Red is icing on the cake, and it gives us all [a] real good feeling about what we’re doing.” Washburn notes the facility "will be located at Boston Landing, which is also home to the new practice facility for the Bruins, Warrior Ice Arena." It will also be "visible from the Massachusetts Turnpike with a 40-foot glass wall enclosing the practice courts that face the approximately 130,000 daily commuters." The practice facility will "encompass approximately 70,000 square feet" (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/25). ESPN BOSTON's Chris Forsberg noted the Celtics since '99 have "practiced at HealthPoint, a health club in the Boston suburb of Waltham." The new site will bring the team "closer to TD Garden and its neighboring executive offices in downtown Boston" (ESPNBOSTON.com, 10/24). The Celtics also announced that New Balance as part of its naming-rights partnership will become an official partner of the Celtics and will receive "significant brand presence throughout the facility" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 10/25).

OH, DANNY BOY: The BOSTON GLOBE MAGAZINE's Chad Finn writes under the header, "How Danny Ainge Is Making The Celtics Great Again." Ainge is the "best deal maker the Celtics have seen" since Auerbach. While Ainge's "competitive streak and relentless obnoxiousness made him hated as a player, as a GM he’s known for being measured and open-minded, as well as for being covetous of information." The Celtics were "one of the first NBA organizations to fully embrace Moneyball-style analytics, but he also deeply values scouting." Gotham: "I’ve never seen him once lose his temper. But he gets caught up in the game. We tell him it might not be the best idea to sit courtside" (BOSTON GLOBE MAGAZINE, 10/23 issue).
