Tigers, Phillies Among MLB Front Offices Bringing On Staff To Beef Up Baseball Analytics

The Tigers' baseball analytics division is "growing under the leadership" of Senior Dir of Baseball Analytics & Operations Jay Sartori and Dir of Baseball Operations Sam Menzin, and the team is "nearing completion of a new internal software called 'Caesar' that should be operational in January," according to Evan Woodbery of MLIVE.com. The team has openings for a manager and a data architect in the department, which Exec VP/Baseball Operations & GM Al Avila described as "in its infancy." Avila: "We will be hiring several more people in that area that will basically just be doing the calculations, mathematics, formulas that they create to help us make better decisions, which is not in place right now, and hasn't been" (MLIVE.com, 10/23).

GET SMART: In Philadelphia, John George noted the Phillies' front office also is "looking to expand" the analytics department, but "isn't ready to talk about it in detail just yet." The team recently "posted two jobs online: one seeking a senior quantitative analyst and the other for a senior software engineer." At the start of the year, the Phillies lured former YouTube Quantitative Analyst Andy Galdi to become Dir of Baseball Research & Development. The Phillies even "created their own proprietary information system to manage data" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 10/21).
