Detroit Free Press sports columnist DREW SHARP "died Friday morning at his home" in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Sharp, 56, had been a columnist since '99 after joining the paper in '83. He first covered high school, college and pro beats before becoming the paper's beat writer for Michigan State and the Pistons. Sharp was "famous for his acerbic wit and for being tough on the teams he covered." KAREN SHARP "found her husband unresponsive" at 5:30am ET (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 10/23). Sharp's Free Press colleague, Mitch Albom, wrote he was a "lively, intelligent man who shook when he laughed heartily and never minded taking a harsh stand" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 10/23). The Detroit News' Bob Wojnowski wrote Sharp's passing leaves a "void" in the city's sports world. Wojnowski: "If you knew him, you'd like him, and you'd appreciate his wit and kindness more than you ever imagined" (DETROIT NEWS, 10/22).

NO TIME TO LOSE: Former NBA Commissioner DAVID STERN "was a surprise guest at the Celtics Shamrock Foundation Gala" last week at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Stern said, "I'm very busy. I'm a senior adviser to a venture capital firm, big four accounting firm strategy group, an investment bank, and I counsel several startups and I'm a senior adviser to the NBA as well. So I'm more booked up than ever, having a great time" (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/23).

ORDER IN THE COURT: In Baltimore, Jeff Barker profiled Rifkin Weiner Livingston Managing Partner ALAN RIFKIN, the principal outside counsel to MASN. He also represents the Maryland Jockey Club and has served has primary counsel to the Orioles since ’94. In his spare time, Rifkin “occasionally pitches in 30-and-over baseball tournaments” (Baltimore SUN, 10/22).

NAMES: The Michigan Court of Appeals “ruled to uphold” a $16.5M arbitration award to Compuware co-Founder & Hurricanes Owner PETER KARMANOS JR. “stemming from a lengthy legal battle with Compuware.” The money awarded was for “wrongful termination and taking away stock options” (DETROIT NEWS, 10/22)....Knight Commission of Intercollegiate Athletics Chair BRIT KIRWAN will “close another chapter of his career at the end of December when he steps down” from the position he has been in the past 11 years (WASHINGTON POST, 10/24)....Former MLBer CURT SCHILLING reportedly is joining conservative news network Breitbart, getting a national outlet as he "edges closer to deciding whether to challenge” Senator ELIZABETH WARREN (D-Mass.) in ’18 (WASHINGTON POST, 10/24)....Comedian BILL MURRAY on Friday wore Cubs gear during a visit to the White House. PRESIDENT OBAMA said, "He was wearing a Cubs jacket -- which for a White Sox fan is a little troubling" (WASHINGTON POST, 10/22)....Filmmaker NICHOLAS BARNICLE on Friday married MEAGHAN CARRIGAN. Barnicle's company, Prospect Productions, produced two ESPN "30 for 30" documentaries: "HOLY GRAIL THE T206 HONUS WAGNER" and "THE DEAL" (N.Y. TIMES, 10/23).
