Florida-Based Soccer Net GolTV Files Suit Against Fox Sports Latin America

Florida-based soccer network GolTV "sued Fox Sports Latin America in federal court Thursday, alleging that Fox executives had paid tens of millions of dollars in bribes to FIFA officials in South America," according to Hobson & Caselli of the WASHINGTON POST. The lawsuit "accuses Fox Sports executives of participating in a scheme involving money laundering, offshore shell companies and illicit wire transfers to Swiss bank accounts." GolTV has "repeatedly lost out on the television rights to tournaments that Fox Sports aired." Fox in a statement said, "This is an entirely meritless claim." According to the complaint, Fox Sports "paid bribes to secure the television rights to the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana, two popular tournaments featuring club teams from across South America and Mexico." The suit also claims Fox execs "channeled the money" through Cayman Island-based T&T Sports Marketing, which was part-owned by Fox and Alejandro Burzaco, an "Argentine businessman facing criminal charges as part of the U.S. Justice Department’s ongoing case against dozens of FIFA executives." The lawsuit names Fox Networks President of Latin America Carlos Martinez, former Fox Int'l Channels CEO Hernan Lopez and former Fox Pan American Sports COO James Ganley as "involved in bribery and money laundering" (WASHINGTON POST, 10/22).
