CBS/NFL Net See Sharp Drop For Bears-Packers Week 7 "TNF," But Still Win Primetime

CBS and NFL Network last combined for a 9.4 overnight rating for the Packers’ 26-10 win over the Bears on “TNF,” which marked the final Thursday telecast for CBS this season. That figure is down from an 11.5 overnight last year for the Seahawks’ 20-3 blowout win over the 49ers in Week 7. It also is down from an 11.6 for Jets-Patriots in Week 7 in ’14. Bears-Packers drew a 44.5 local rating in Milwaukee, while Chicago drew a 12.5 overnight as the market was competing with Cubs-Dodgers NLCS Game 5. That game got a 24.1 local rating in Chicago. CBS and NFL Net last year in Week 7 had no MLB Postseason competition. Despite the drop for the overnight rating, CBS should easily win primetime among all networks (Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor).

JUST TOO MUCH: The Wall Street Journal's Jason Gay said of the NFL's recent ratings issues, “This is a classic case of hubris where the league has basically overextended itself. We now see the creep into Thursday night. Of course, Sunday night cannibalized the Monday night product and when you have these marquee games, the numbers are bad in the primetime games when you have a stand-alone game." Gay: “It's those marquee games which really aren't very marquee, and people are spending less time with it.” Former NFLer and The Undefeated contributor Domonique Foxworth said the games are “oversaturated.” Foxworth: “The product is very similar, but they're flooding the market.” The viewership drop "doesn't make sense unless there's some kind of aberration, which I think we can all agree that this year's election cycle has been an aberration, to put it mildly.” Fox Sports Exec VP/Research, League Operations & Strategy Michael Mulvihill said the “social media presence of the NFL” and the “grassroots presence among fans really does help." Mulvihill: "As far as the streaming of games and the Twitter deal on Thursday nights, I think that's a growing part of our audience, but it's still small enough that we don't really point to it as something that would be a factor in the decline on traditional TV” ("OTL," ESPN, 10/20).
