Media Notes

SI's Alex Prewitt writes many of the NHL's "most thrilling individual draws," including Maple Leafs C Auston Matthews, Oilers C Connor McDavid, Jets RW Patrik Laine and Flames LW Johnny Gaudreau, "rarely appear on national TV in the States." Viewership in the U.S. "simply doesn't justify regular appearances from the small-market teams" in Canada. The Maple Leafs and Canadiens "remain the only Canadian teams scheduled to appear on NBC this season" (SI, 10/24 issue). In Edmonton, Jim Matheson writes, "You can catch the Flyers about 20 times, though. What are they thinking?" (EDMONTON JOURNAL, 10/21).

NEW AT NOON: SPORTING NEWS' Michael McCarthy cited sources as saying that ESPN is eyeing Bomani Jones and Pablo Torre "to replace Jemele Hill and Michael Smith in the noon time slot on ESPN2." Jones and Torre are "viewed as rising talents in Bristol." A source said that a final decision "hasn't been made." McCarthy noted the Jones-Torre duo is "just one of several scenarios under consideration" (SPORTINGNEWS.com, 10/20).

PEOPLE & PERSONALITIES: Derek Scott has been named the Univ. of South Carolina's "play-by-play announcer for men’s basketball and baseball." Scott since '07 has "served as a television and radio play-by-play voice for various Gamecock teams." He has also "been the host of Gamecock Athletics’ weekly show, 'Inside the Roost,' highlighting the programs" of the South Carolina athletics department (GREENVILLE NEWS, 10/21)....Former SEC basketball players Pat Bradley and Jarvis Hayes will provide analysis surrounding more than 120 men's basketball games on SEC Network this season (ESPN).
