FS1 Gets Record Overnight Rating For Cubs-Dodgers Game 5; Strong Figure In Chicago

FS1 on Thursday night drew a 5.3 overnight rating for the Cubs’ 8-4 win over the Dodgers in Game 5 of the NLCS, marking the cable net's best overnight for any telecast on record. NLCS Game 5 had competition from the Bears-Packers “TNF” game on CBS/NFL Network, as well as college football on ESPN. There was no comparable NLCS Game 5 last year, as the Mets swept the Cubs on TBS. FS1 for Royals-Blue Jays ALCS Game 5 last year on a Wednesday night drew a 1.8 overnight, while the cable net drew a 3.5 overnight in ’14 for the Giants' NLCS-clinching Game 5 win over the Cardinals, airing on a Thursday night. Cubs-Dodgers game 5 will likely give FS1 a primetime win among all cable nets. Chicago drew a 24.1 local rating for the game, marking the net's best rating ever in the market and nearly doubling what CBS/NFL Net drew locally for Bears-Packers (12.5 rating) (Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor).

FROM THE FIELD TO THE BOOTH: In Boston, Chad Finn writes TBS studio analyst Pedro Martinez is "well on his way to being the [Charles] Barkley of baseball broadcasting, not only because his force of personality practically bursts from the television screen, but also because he apparently can get away with saying things that would submerge less-skilled and admired analysts in hot water." Meanwhile, John Smoltz has been "superb" on Fox broadcasts, "especially in explaining with detailed first-hand knowledge what a closer’s mind-set is like when he’s called upon to pitch in a situation other than the ninth inning." And Alex Rodriguez is "so good at talking baseball, so natural that if he stays with it long-term, it might ultimately change his public perception as an insincere false god." Two years into contributing to Fox’ playoff broadcasts, Rodriguez has "already done something that seemed highly unlikely: He has become almost likable, and certainly someone with whom you think you’d enjoy watching a game" (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/21).

NO L.A. STORY? In L.A., Tom Hoffarth asks, "Why did the Fox Sports 1 pre- and postgame show go on the road to Wrigley Field for Games 1 and 2 last week, but was a no-show at Dodger Stadium for Games 3, 4 and 5?" A source said that the crew featuring Pete Rose, Rodriguez and Frank Thomas stayed at the L.A. studio because it "made more sense logistically and financially," even if it "would have made for a better visual having the guys planted in the Dodger Stadium parking lot and challenging Cubs and Dodgers fans to commingle peacefully" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 10/21).
