Audience Analysis: CBS, NBC Seeing College Football Gains; NASCAR Has Kansas Low

CBS is seeing a 12% viewership increase for its SEC football package through Week 7, averaging 5.31 million viewers compared to 4.72 million viewers at the same period last season. The net should also benefit from a matchup this weekend featuring No. 1 Alabama and No. 6 Texas A&M. Alabama-Ole Miss on Sept. 17 has been the net’s best figure this season to date, drawing 8.17 million viewers. Meanwhile, NBC is averaging 3.26 million viewers for its four Notre Dame football games to date, up 6% from 3.07 million viewers at the same point last season. NBC has benefitted from two primetime games this season.

NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE: NBC on Sunday afternoon drew 3.445 million viewers for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race from Kansas Speedway, marking the lowest figure for the fall Kansas race since it was added to the Cup schedule in ’01. Each Chase race this season has seen a drop in viewership compared to ’15.

BULL RUN: CBS for its 14 PBR telecasts this season averaged 1.27 million viewers, up 12% from the net’s 14 telecasts in ’15. This past Sunday’s San Jose Invitational averaged 2.11 million viewers, marking the second-best PBR event on the net this season and third-best audience over the past three years.

The chart below lists final audience figures from select recent sports telecasts.
