Senators Struggling Early In Season With Attendance Despite Positive On-Ice Results

The Senators are off to a 3-1 start to the NHL season, but attendance issues "[reared] their ugly head again" with Tuesday's announced crowd of only 11,061 at Canadian Tire Centre for a game against the Coyotes, according to Wayne Scanlan of the OTTAWA CITIZEN. The Senators will have to continue to "create buzz," because the season-ticket base is "clearly near an all-time low." The Senators over the years have "drawn remarkably well considering the location" of Canadian Tire Centre, but "traces of lethargy have crept in." Now comes the "daunting task of drawing crowds" for 10 home dates in November. To sell tickets, the Senators are "going to have to keep winning" (OTTAWA CITIZEN, 10/20). In Ottawa, Ken Warren writes, "Where are their fans? Blame the mediocrity. Blame the Blue Jays." Warren: "Whatever the case may be, the Senators have hit rock bottom from an attendance point of view. Or, at least the organization better hope it can't get any worse" (OTTAWA SUN, 10/20). Also in Ottawa, Don Brennan writes Tuesday's attendance was "truly embarrassing." It might have something to do with all of Canada having "Blue Jays fever and Ottawa not wanting to miss" any of the AL playoffs. Then again, it could be the fans "showing their displeasure with a team that keeps running into the hump," but "never gets over it" (OTTAWA SUN, 10/20). The Toronto Sun's Terry Koshan on his Twitter feed called Tuesday's attendance number "startling." TSN's David William Naylor: "Senators attendance of 11,061 (announced) last night is the smallest crowd in Canada for an NHL game since when?" The Score's Ian McLaren: "Lightning home crowd: 19,092. Senators home crowd: 11,061.Expansion cousins heading in different directions" (TWITTER.com, 10/19).
