Facility Notes

In Atlanta, Tim Tucker notes the Falcons marked a milestone yesterday as one of the "final steel beams for the fixed portion of the roof was lifted into position" for Mercedes-Benz Stadium (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 10/20). Meanwhile, Tucker noted the Falcons have ordered $209M "worth of changes since the start of construction" for the venue. The changes "don’t affect the amount of taxpayer money committed to the project." The Falcons are "responsible for construction cost overruns" (AJC.com, 10/19).

CONSTRUCTION ZONE: In L.A., Nathan Fenno notes excavation for the Rams' $2.6B stadium in Inglewood "may be weeks away." Hollywood Park Land Project Manager Gerard McCallum II yesterday said, "We’re moving to try and get into construction sometime in the next month." In another "sign of progress on the project at the 298-acre site," the FAA this week "approved the first of several pieces of heavy equipment to be used during construction" (L.A. TIMES, 10/20).

SURVEY SAYS: In Columbus, Michael Arace writes it is "no surprise" the Crew are already "sending out surveys" to fans to assess demand for a new stadium. The team "still has seven years remaining on its reasonably priced, 25-year lease with the Ohio Expo Center," where Mapfre Stadium is located. But it is "time to push the ball forward." Some of the survey questions "feel leading" and "loaded" (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 10/20).

BUYER'S MARKET: In Seattle, Mike Rosenberg noted hedge-fund manager Chris Hansen has "scooped up another pricey property in Seattle's Sodo as he pursues his dream of building an arena to bring back the Sonics." County records show that his latest move is the $25M purchase of a "six-story building" across from Safeco Field, as well as a vacant lot next door. In all, Hansen has now spent $122.5M "gobbling up 12.66 acres in Sodo near where his arena is proposed" (SEATTLE TIMES, 10/19).
