NFL Week 6 Overnights: Cowboys-Packers Is Best NFL Figure For '16; "SNF" Down Sharply

Fox led all NFL Week 6 Sunday telecasts with Cowboys-Packers in the national window, and the 17.4 overnight rating for the window marks the league’s best rating this season to date. CBS had the Week 6 national window last year, which featured Chargers-Packers and drew a 15.5 overnight. Meanwhile, NBC saw a sharp drop for its “SNF” telecast. The Texans’ OT win over the Colts drew a 9.0 overnight, down 38% from a 14.6 for Patriots-Colts in Week 6 last year. The game still delivered NBC a primetime win. Indianapolis led all markets with a 35.0 local rating, followed by a 25.1 for Houston. CBS drew an 11.2 overnight for its singleheader window yesterday, marking its best singleheader since Week 14 last season (Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor).

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX: In N.Y., John Healy writes the Eagles and Browns' Twitter accounts yesterday "came up with a creative way to get around" the NFL's new rule that "forbids teams posting videos and GIFs of highlights directly from television to social media." The two teams "tweeted out GIFs electronic football players reenacting specific plays from the game" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/17). YAHOO FINANCE's Daniel Roberts noted NFL VP/Social Media & Emerging Programming Tom Brady tried to "explain and defend the changes" in the social media policy. Brady said, "Everyone has focused on the fining, or that we're clamping down, whereas the reality is the overall policy is evolving to allow teams to do much more than before." Brady said that there is "actually more content available to the teams now." Brady: "Previous iterations of the policy were more restrictive on the amount of content teams could post," and that limit has been expanded. Brady added, "If we allowed the clubs, and ourselves, to put every single bit out there, there could end up being a lot of noise." Brady said the goal of the latest change is "to balance out the desire for the clubs to reach their fans with retaining the league's value in the marketplace" (FINANCE.YAHOO.com, 10/12).

TEMPERING EMOTIONS: In N.Y., Bob Raissman gives credit to CBS' Greg Gumbel and Trent Green for "not going totally gaga" over Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr.'s "spectacular performance and injecting a tiny bit of reality into the spectacle." Earlier in the game, when Giants WR Victor Cruz "made an elongated first-down sign, after catching a second-quarter pass, Gumbel chided him." Gumbel: "An unnecessary pointing down field (by Cruz). Let the officials do that" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/17). In Baltimore, David Zurawik writes CBS Sports director Suzanne Smith is "outstanding," and her team for Ravens-Giants "again delivered a strong telecast of an exciting game." Zurawik: "Her cameras were all over the action, and she gave us almost every angle we needed on every big play" (Baltimore SUN, 10/17).

THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY: THE MMQB's Peter King writes viewers should hear Fox analyst Chris Spielman "every Sunday on a big game" after "listening to him describe clearly and cuttingly the deficiency in tackling in the NFL today" (MMQB.SI.com, 10/17). The DAILY NEWS' Raissman asks if there is "anyone who is more unlikable" on NFL pregame shows than ESPN's Trent Dilfer? Maybe the ratings for "Sunday NFL Countdown" are "tanking because he's scaring eyeballs away" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/17). In K.C., Jesse Newell notes KCTV-CBS' feed of yesterday's Chiefs-Raiders "went blank for some subscribers" around 4:47pm CT. The station tweeted the outage, which "lasted about 13 minutes, was because of transmitter issues." A signal "returned late in the third quarter" (K.C. STAR, 10/17).
