Nevada Assembly Set To Vote On Raiders Stadium Funding; Oakland Remains In Talks

The Nevada Legislature reconvenes today, with the Assembly to consider a bill that would help finance a domed NFL stadium in Las Vegas, but the path to passage "could get bumpy," according to Sandra Chereb of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. The bill, already passed by the state Senate, "needs 28 votes to pass the lower house," but how it will be "received by the Republican-controlled Assembly is unclear." Assembly majority leader Paul Anderson said that lawmakers were "working toward a possible final vote" for sometime today. Asked if there were enough votes to secure passage, Anderson said, "I don't think I could answer that" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 10/13). In Las Vegas, Jackie Valley notes the Assembly "can request additional amendments" (LAS VEGAS SUN, 10/13).

NOT SO FAST: In S.F., Matier & Ross report Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf "plans to push ahead with efforts to craft a stadium deal among the team, the NFL and a group of investors" fronted by Pro Football HOFer Ronnie Lott and former NFLer Rodney Peete. Schaaf said, "We are bringing what we have to the table to keep the Raiders." Although the mayor said that the talks "have been positive -- and that more are scheduled for this week -- no one will say who is putting up the money behind a possible Oakland deal for a new stadium" where the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum now stands. A source said, “This is a strong, verifiable group that not only has the wherewithal, but the knowledge and experience to pull this off. They have the relationships, trust and confidences necessary with all the right people -- including the NFL and local officials.” Matier & Ross note one thing Schaaf "will not do is try to match Las Vegas’ offer to kick in" $750M in hotel tax money toward a stadium. Schaaf: "Oakland made that mistake in the past and will not repeat it" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 10/13).

METRIC ANALYSIS: CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora noted the NFL owners' "prerogative is that the team stays in Oakland." La Canfora: "If you are looking at really any metric that you would use to analyze a market -- gross income, rising income, number of households -- it all points to the Bay Area being a better market." TV-wise, there is "no comparison and the 49ers aren't tethered and anchored to that downtown area anymore." La Canfora: "This thing will play out and the league knows how to stall these processes" ("Time To Schein," CBSSN, 10/12).
