Could NFL Begin Imposing Stiffer Sanctions On Players For Ongoing Uniform Violations?

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin yesterday said it was “not necessary” to have conversations with WR Antonio Brown about adjusting his behavior in regards to wearing unauthorized cleats and excessive celebrations, according to Chris Adamski of the PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW. On Sunday against the Jets, Brown was "told to change his shoes during a game [for] the second time this season." He was "fined for wearing blue shoes in Week 1." Brown has "accumulated more than $45,000 in league fines this season because of his shoes and his celebrations." But Tomlin said that he "hasn't had discussions with Brown about changing his tact on either" (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 10/12). ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler noted consistent disregard for uniform rules can give Commissioner Roger Goodell "power to suspend a player or fine team officials." It would be "silly for Goodell to do that," as Brown "isn't exactly acting defiantly." But he "clearly knows the rules and still keeps trying to sneak the shoes onto the field after kickoff" (ESPN.com, 10/11).

FASHION DEBATE: ESPN’s Herm Edwards said there should be guidelines to what players wear on the field because “knowing players and knowing their agents, then all of a sudden they got a sponsor. Let’s put this emblem on your shoes. It’s money and it’s the look.” ESPN’s Ryan Clark said the NFL can “loosen the reins a little bit on some things and (has) the parameters be a broader base that you can do different things, but they have to have some rules.” Edwards: “It’s professional football. Let’s look professional” (“NFL Live,” ESPN, 10/10). Fox' Charles Tillman said the NFL should allow players to wear custom shoes, and the league is “so strict on it because they’re not making money.” Tillman: “You can’t wear these cleats because we’re not getting a piece of the pie.” But FS1’s Shannon Sharpe said players should "look like a team” wearing similar uniforms and shoes and “eventually the NFL is going to say, ‘The shoes that you wear in the game are only the shoes that will be allowed in pregame’” (“Undisputed,” FS1, 10/10).
