Spanos Says Chargers Will Not Consider Building A Stadium In Mission Valley

Chargers Chair Dean Spanos on Thursday said that the team "won't consider pursuing a new stadium in Mission Valley if voters reject the team's Nov. 8 ballot measure for a combined downtown stadium and convention center annex," according to David Garrick of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Spanos: "I am not a believer in Mission Valley -- I don't think I would ever go back there." Spanos said that it "wouldn't make financial sense for the city or the team." However, he said that eliminating Mission Valley from the equation "doesn't make it certain the team will move" to L.A. if Measure C "falls short of the required two-thirds approval, which is likely based on recent polling." Spanos: "Sitting here today there is no Plan B. That would be admitting defeat and I'm not going to do that." Garrick notes that leaves open the possibility that the Chargers would "take another shot at downtown if Measure C fails, or the team could explore other potential sites in the city or county." Spanos said that how close Measure C comes to passing "could play a role in his decision." Spanos: "If we only get 30 or 35 percent that tells you one thing. If we get 60 percent that tells you something else. I'm anxious to see what's going to happen." He also explained that San Diego, as one of the "smallest markets in the NFL, doesn't have enough large corporations to make an unsubsidized stadium feasible" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 9/30).
