League Notes

In Vancouver, E. Spencer Kyte writes if it "wasn't obvious before, it should be crystal-clear now that when it comes to determining the course of his career, Conor McGregor is calling all the shots and the UFC is simply along for the ride." Kyte: "Riding shotgun with the biggest star in the sport and a fighter that is re-writing the record book with each headlining pay-per-view assignment isn't necessarily a bad thing if you're the UFC." However, the problem is in trying to "maintain the illusion that the Irish standout isn't the one dictating the terms" (VANCOUVER SUN, 9/29).

PITCH IMPERFECT: SOCCER AMERICA's Ridge Mahoney noted since "re-launching five years ago, the NASL has grappled with establishing a cohesive identity." Team strategy is "all over the map." Issues with Rayo OKC's parent club in Spain have "clouded the future" for the club and the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers are "beset by severe financial problems." A downsizing of teams "seems inevitable." But NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson said that the league is in "discussions with several groups regarding future expansion" (SOCCERAMERICA.com 9/28).

RACING, EH? The CP's Alexandre Geoffrion-McInnis notes the Canadian Grand Prix, in "doubt because of delays in promised track improvements, has an asterix beside its name on a provisional" '17 F1 race schedule released yesterday. The schedule still has 21 races listed, but stops in Canada, Germany and Brazil are "still to be approved" by the FIA. A deal signed in '14 to keep the race in Montreal until '24, to which "three levels of government pledged" $187M, included a promise to make $32.6M in improvements by '17 (CP, 9/28).
