MICHAEL PHELPS yesterday said that he "has been busier with sponsor appearances and talk-show guest spots" following the Rio Games "than he was after he won a record eight gold medals" at the '08 Beijing Games. Phelps yesterday played in a celebrity pro-am at Hazeltine National Golf Club "on behalf of the watchmaker Omega." He also was a "surprise guest speaker" for the U.S. Ryder Cup team (N.Y. TIMES, 9/28). 

OUTSIDE PITCH: Tigers P DANIEL NORRIS, who "spends most of his time traveling and shooting photography when he’s not pitching," had his life outside of the ballpark "documented by adventure photographer BEN MOON for a short film called 'OFFSEASON.'" The film can be seen on YouTube (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 9/28). 

GETS THE PEOPLE GOING: MARY J. BLIGE has recorded a song called "STRENGTH OF A WOMAN," which aims to "inspire WNBA teams as they enter the playoffs." Asked why the song will work for the league, she said, "When you look at these women who, in such a male-dominated world, a male-dominated sport -- they’re doing amazing things. Their strength is amazing" (THEUNDEFEATED.com, 9/27).

: The NASCAR Foundation has "awarded the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award to the founder of an organization dedicated to funding pediatric brain cancer research." Team Jack Foundation last night was "presented with the $100,000 award." Team Jack was founded by ANDY HOFFMAN and his wife, BRIANNA (AP, 9/27)....Patriots QB TOM BRADY last night kicked off the 18th annual Best Buddies Challenge with a private reception (Best Buddies). Brady yesterday also was at the Seaport Hotel to "host a kickoff event" for Best Buddies -- a "100-mile charity ride/walk" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/28)....The 76ers on Monday night "had dinner" with actor and team investor WILL SMITH at One Liberty Place in Philadelphia. The players were "unaware that he was going to show up" (PHILLY.com, 9/28)....NASCAR driver RYAN NEWMAN yesterday "took part in Royals batting practice" before the team's game against the Twins (K.C. STAR, 9/29).
