Franchise Notes

In California, Bill Oram noted this spring will "mark the end of the third year" since Lakers VP/Basketball Operations Jim Buss vowed that he would "resign if the Lakers did not return to Western Conference contention within three years." That clock "is ticking," and "no one has come out and said anything that makes you think that’s been amended internally." Oram notes it has "never been clear" whether GM Mitch Kupchak "would get a pass for his demonstrated skill as an executive, or whether he is on the hot seat right along with Buss." But at this point, it "wouldn’t be surprising if it’s the latter" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 9/28).

NOT BALKING: In San Jose, Tim Kawakami writes he "finally called" for 49ers GM Trent Baalke’s firing on Sunday. Kawakami writes the York family likes Baalke, and to a "large extent he has fit the way the franchise likes to do business." So moving away from Baalke will "be a shock to the 49ers system." But his "style of player, his disdain for QBs and WRs, his way of approaching the draft and free-agency, his abhorrence of dealing with the media, his grinding work ethic ... it’s part of who the 49ers are right now." Kawakami: "They absolutely need to change who they are and the largest way is to remove the GM and get somebody who actually speaks to and likes people" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 9/28).

SMILING FACES
: In Boston, Peter Abraham notes despite being 5 1/2 games out of first place in June, the Red Sox have "rolled into the playoffs" and need just one win to take the AL East. Red Sox Owner John Henry yesterday said he is "extraordinarily pleased." Henry: “In late July, looking at our schedule, I was concerned that we might not make the playoffs. But these guys all stepped up at the most important time of the season." Henry yesterday "was at Yankee Stadium" along with Chair Tom Werner and President Sam Kennedy to see Red Sox-Yankees (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/28).
