Media Notes

The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Cimilluca, Lublin & Schwartzel cited sources as saying that Disney has "emerged as another potential bidder for Twitter." Sources added that Twitter, with a valuation of about $20B, has also "held preliminary talks with Salesforce.com." Recent moves by Twitter into streaming sports events have "attracted the attention" of Disney Chair & CEO Bob Iger. Disney could view Twitter’s sports-programming efforts as "creating a potential rival" to ESPN. But in the event of a "successful acquisition, it could be a source of technology that could benefit ESPN as cord-cutting becomes more widespread" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 9/27).

EFFICIENCY RATING: In N.Y., Richard Morgan notes investment banking firm Drexel Hamilton analyst Tony Wible yesterday "downgraded Disney stock," and part of the downgrade was attributed to the "'massive increase in NBA costs' for ESPN." The new NBA TV deal for ESPN has "increase in step-up costs" and "could shave" as much as 5% off Disney's pre-tax profits. ESPN and Turner Sports in October '14 renewed deals with the NBA for $24B (N.Y. POST, 9/27).

GETTING UPDATED: MLBAM yesterday released an update to the Apple iOS version of its flagship MLB.com At Bat mobile app. The enhanced notifications, a key feature of the new iOS 10 operating system, allows for highlights, including in-game clips, to be played directly from the device home screen (Eric Fisher, Staff Writer).

FINGER ROLL: NBA 2K17 is the top-selling paid app on the App Store. Since launching on Sept. 20, it has been the best-selling game app every day, making it the fastest selling app in NBA 2K franchise history (NBA).
