Garber's Planned Visit To Cincinnati Sets Off Speculation About Possible MLS Expansion

MLS Commissioner Don Garber will visit Cincinnati on Nov. 29, a move that has "set off speculation" that USL club FC Cincinnati "could become a major league team," according to Sharon Coolidge of the CINCINNATI ENQUIRER. A public event also will be "held that day, during which the commissioner will talk about his vision for the MLS." Fans and supporters "will be able to ask questions." FC Cincinnati President & GM Jeff Berding said he will use the opportunity to show Garber "first-hand the great things happening in the city, things that enabled us to have incredible inaugural season." FC Cincinnati "launched this year and has exceeded expectations." The team "made the playoffs" and has had "record-breaking attendance drawing more than 300,000 fans." It also hosted a "high profile game" with EPL club Crystal Palace and "garnered the kind of morning-after-the-game water cooler chatter usually reserved for the Reds and Bengals" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 9/27).

TOM TALKS: Pistons Owner Tom Gores during the team's media day yesterday was asked about the interest in bringing an MLS franchise to Detroit, and said, "We're working on it. It's going to take a little time to develop. We're working on it. We're kind of in the same place we were a couple of months ago." On the possibility of a reported $200M MLS franchise fee, Gores said, "It's fine. We're going to meet with the (commissioner). It's going to be great for the city of Detroit. We got some work to do. It's not a done deal, so we got some work to do to deliver it" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 9/27).

FINDING THE RIGHT PITCH: In Nashville, Joey Garrison notes separate efforts to bring pro soccer to Middle Tennessee are "now united behind the same goal" of making Nashville an MLS city. Nashville-based investment group DMD Soccer co-Owner David Dill, whose group in May was awarded USL club Nashville SC, is now also "lending his help to Nashville's bid for an MLS expansion team." Dill is "one of five new additions to a steering committee led by Nashville businessman Bill Hagerty that is working to put Nashville in position to compete for a franchise in MLS's next round of expansion." The Nashville MLS Organizing Committee "announced the additions, including Dill, who has been named a committee organizer" (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 9/27).
