Headed In The Right Direction? CBS/NFL Net See 5% Increase For Week 3 "TNF" Overnight

CBS and NFL Network drew a combined 12.5 overnight rating for the Patriots' 27-0 win over the Texans on "Thursday Night Football," marking a 5% increase over the 11.9 overnight for Redskins-Giants in Week 3 last year. It also marks the sixth-best "TNF" overnight on record. The game delivered a primetime win on Thursday night as well. Texans-Patriots peaked at a 13.6 rating from 9:00-9:30pm ET. Boston led all markets with a 37.6 local rating, followed by Providence with a 31.5 rating. Houston ranked No. 3 with a 28.6 local rating (Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor).

MOVING ON: In St. Louis, Dan Caesar writes following a "dismal ratings performance last weekend" for Seahawks-Rams, St. Louis-based KTVI-Fox "decided to send a non-Rams game to the market this weekend." The channel is set to air Lions-Packers rather than Rams-Buccaneers on Sunday. KTVI drew a 6.8 local rating for Seahawks-Rams, the "lowest rating among the four NFL games shown locally that day, and that played a big part in the decision to pull the Rams off local television." By comparison, the St. Louis rating for the Rams' second game last year, against the Redskins, was a 17.9 (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 9/23).

UNION INTERESTED IN RATINGS: NFLPA Exec Dir DeMaurice Smith said the drop in ratings through the first two weeks of the season is a "huge issue" for the union, though he was "thrilled to see the game being streamed on Twitter" on Thursday night. Smith: "We're interested about where media is going." He added, "It is smart for us to look at not only the impact of whether fans are watching on TV or not, but certainly -- you and I both know this (labor) contract ends in 2021, I'm sure there's people at the networks who are trying to figure out whether or not there's going to be labor peace after 2021 and how that affects the TV contracts” ("PFT," NBCSN, 9/23).
