Media Notes

Longtime Astros TV broadcaster Bill Brown on Thursday announced his "plans to retire at season's end" after "calling 30 seasons of Astros baseball." In Houston, Jake Kaplan notes Brown cited "fading abilities and a diminished level of passion for game preparation as reasons for stepping away." He had "cut down on traveling for road games in recent years," working a 100-game schedule. The Astros do "not yet have a plan for his successor" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 9/23).

WHISTLE WHILE YOU WORK: Digital media company Whistle Sports signed a deal with the NFL that will allow the service to create and distribute NFL-themed content on social media this season. The NFL views this as an opportunity to reach younger fans, given the demographic of Whistle’s viewers. The NFL deal will see players participate in typical Whistle programming, including comedy, impersonations, trick shots and e-sports. Whistle also will provide workout and training videos, skill competitions and documentaries on fans. Whistle sells advertisers on presenting sponsorships and brand integrations through these videos. Whistle President Jeff Urban and NFL VP/Media Strategy Julie Moeller led the deal discussions for both sides (John Ourand, Staff Writer).

MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT
: Comcast Chair & CEO Brian Roberts on Tuesday "marveled" at the recent Rio Games on NBC. Roberts, speaking at Goldman Sachs' Communicopia Conference in N.Y., said, "We're really proud as a company to have broadcast that." Technologically, he called it "a home run." Roberts said the Games were "the most profitable, as we predicted, by a pretty wide margin. ... We exited in stronger financial shape than we entered" (DEADLINE.com, 9/20).
