NBA Kings' Golden 1 Center Certified LEED Platinum By U.S. Green Building Council

The NBA Kings on Thursday announced that their new Golden 1 Center had been "certified LEED Platinum by the U.S. Green Building Council," the "first indoor arena to achieve that status," according to Ryan Lillis of the SACRAMENTO BEE. LEED Platinum is "given to projects that meet strict standards in energy use, water efficiency, transportation impacts and the materials used in construction." Golden 1 Center will be "powered during the day by solar panels on the building's roof." The LEED stamp of approval also "takes into account how the arena was constructed." Nearly all of the construction materials from the former Downtown Plaza were "recycled when the mall was demolished, and more than a third of the materials used to build the arena were from recycled sources." The Kings also plan to source 90% of the food and drink concessions from "businesses and farms within 150 miles of the arena." The arena will "host next year’s Green Sports Alliance" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 9/22). In Sacramento, Dale Kasler notes former NBA Commissioner David Stern is "coming to Sacramento for a ribbon-cutting ceremony" Sept. 30 for the arena. The ceremony will "include the renaming of a portion of the street leading to the arena in Stern's honor." Stern "championed Sacramento’s efforts to build a new arena and keep the Kings from leaving town." He personally "negotiated an arena deal" in '12 with the team’s former owners, the Maloofs, and "committed several million dollars of league money to the project." After the Maloofs "scuttled the deal and agreed to sell the Kings" in '13 to investors from Seattle, Stern helped Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson recruit Kings Managing Partner Vivek Ranadive and "other investors who made a competing bid for the franchise" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 9/23).
