Lack Of Interest For Bidding On Future Games One Of Several Issues Facing IOC

The growing grassroots resistance to the Olympics in democracies -- as evidenced by Rome pulling its bid for the '24 Games -- is just one of several headaches plaguing the IOC right now, according to veteran international sports marketer Patrick Nally. The organization also is dealing with doping and ticketing scandals, troubled relations with WADA and challenges in preparations for the ’18 PyeongChang Games. The IOC also just came off an especially difficult Rio Games and needs a host that can handle it on its own, Nally said. “The current IOC membership, and certainly the executives, would want to have some trouble-free years,” he stated. Both L.A. and Paris are framing their bids for the '24 Games as low-risk because there is so much infrastructure already in place in their cities. Nally believes most observers give L.A. the nod in the risk-avoidance category, in part because of the repeated terrorism attacks that have hit France. One school of thought says the Rome departure could be bad news for L.A. because it leaves the European-centric IOC with one less “favorite son” bid to support in the first round, making it more likely that L.A. would be eliminated as the low vote-getter. “Under normal circumstances, I would agree with [that], but I don't think we’re in normal circumstances,” Nally said. "I think the whole ethos has changed."
