League Notes

In Jacksonville, David Bauerlein notes Jaguars Owner Shad Khan met over the weekend with new London Mayor Sadiq Khan, and the mayor's office said that discussions involved "bringing more NFL games to London." Sadiq Khan tweeted after the Saturday morning meeting in Chicago: “Great to meet Shahid Khan today to talk about my drive to bring an @nfl franchise to London.” Bauerlein notes the mayor’s tweet "did not say anything about the mayor wanting to lure the Jaguars, or any other specific team, to London" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 9/20).

ISSUES GALORE: In Philadelphia, Jonathan Tannenwald wrote NWSL Commissioner Jeff Plush has been "dealing with a litany of charges since the day he took the job" in '15, and "things have only gotten worse" this season." He "hasn't gotten the league a robust enough national TV deal," and he allowed the Western New York Flash to "play a league game earlier this year on a field set up entirely within the outfield of a baseball diamond." Plush also "didn't ensure that the league went dark during all U.S. women's national team camps, and didn't stand up sufficiently to the U.S. Soccer Federation's scheduling of national team games during the league season." However, not all of the NWSL's problems "are his fault" (PHILLY.com, 9/19).

GOING TO COURT: REUTERS' Jonathan Stempel noted NASCAR is the subject of a $500M lawsuit "accusing the auto racing body of racial discrimination for preventing black-owned teams and drivers from competing, including in the Sprint Cup Series." Court records show Terrance Cox and his company, Diversity Motorsports Racing, "filed a lawsuit late on Friday in U.S. district court in Manhattan" against NASCAR, Int'l Speedway Corp. and 18 teams. The plaintiffs also are "seeking an injunction requiring the defendants to 'fully integrate the African-American community'" (REUTERS, 9/19).
