Rio Games Helps Yahoo-NBC Top ESPN In ComScore Rankings, Set Monthly Record

Fueled by the Rio Games, the Yahoo Sports-NBC Sports Network in August set a new comScore sports category record, posting a total of more than 110.4 million uniques in monthly multiplatform digital rankings. The total surpasses the 94.4 million ESPN posted in September ’15, and makes it the first entrant to surpass 100 million uniques in a month. The total, a 97% jump from the Yahoo Sports-NBC Sports total in July, also breaks ESPN’s run of leading the list for 29 consecutive months. The last time ESPN did not lead in monthly uniques was in February ’14, with the Sochi Games helping Yahoo Sports-NBC Sports to the top spot. Consumption metrics in August were more scattered. MLB led average time spent per visitor with a total of 73.5 minutes, extending its occurrence in July as the first single-sport entrant to lead the category in that measure. MLB again had the top mobile app as well, with its MLB.com At Bat posting 1.31 billion minutes of consumption, nearly twice as much as any other app. Yahoo Sports-NBC Sports Network led in overall consumption with 6.12 billion. But ESPN’s average time spent per visitor figure of 64 minutes ranked second behind MLB, and topped Yahoo Sports-NBC Sports Network’s figure of 55.4 minutes.
