MMQB Survey Shows Players Split On Marijuana Testing, Want Guaranteed Contracts

NFL players are seemingly split on the issue of whether the league should "continue testing players for marijuana," according to SI. A preseason poll of 110 players showed that 47.5% of respondents believe testing should continue, 45.5% said it should not. The remaining 7% said it "doesn't matter." Players are were asked what they would do if they were "commissioner for a day," with the most popular response (22 votes) being that they would "guarantee all contracts." Nine players would "lower fines on players," while four said they would make it so Commissioner Roger Goodell "would not be judge and jury." Regarding other topics, just 18% of respondents support expanding the playoffs, while a plurality of players believe kids should begin playing tackle football for the first time in middle school (SI, 9/19 issue).

THROWING THEIR INFUENCE AROUND: Patriots QB Tom Brady heads The MMQB's annual list of the NFL's "most influential figures," with Goodell ranking third. Business "is booming" as Goodell enters his second decade on the job, though his public approval rating "is not." Raiders Owner Mark Davis made the list at No. 4, and if his Las Vegas stadium plan "advances, this son of an owner will have to mend fences with West Coast loyalists and court a new fan base." Rams Owner Stan Kroenke comes in at No. 8, as he is "looking to fulfill the promise of a glitzy" $2.6B destination stadium and "satisfying a historically fickle fan base" (SI, 9/19 issue).
