California Love: Rams' Return To L.A. Becomes Official With Sunday Game At Coliseum

The NFL will "truly, officially return" to L.A. on Sunday after 22 years, when the Rams "take the field in a sold-out Coliseum for their first regular-season home game of the season," according to Greg Beacham of the AP. Rams Owner Stan Kroenke has "brought the game back to a sprawling town that seems eager to unite" behind the team. Rams S T.J. McDonald said, "We all know it's going to be a great moment to run down that tunnel." Beacham notes after the "cathartic excitement and a pregame concert by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Rams (0-1) need to make sure they don't get trampled" by the Seahawks after losing 28-0 to the 49ers in Week 1. Rams coach Jeff Fisher, an L.A. native, said, "It's going to take our best shot" (AP, 9/16). USA TODAY's Martin Rogers writes under the header, "Rams' Mission: Win Games, Fans." Over the two decades-plus since the both the Rams and Raiders left town, locals "didn't forget about the NFL." Rather, they "found other teams to support." L.A. "loves its sports, but with a couple of fairly significant caveats." There are eight professional sports franchises in the area plus USC and UCLA, but to "describe the fan base as fickle is far from unkind." Success "leads to packed arenas and declarations of civic-rooted sporting love." Short of that, there is "plenty else going on to while away the days." The Rams "might be a little short on both quality and star power just now" (USA TODAY, 9/16).

SUNDAY BEST: In L.A., Gary Klein notes the Rams will "wear royal blue and yellow throwback uniforms Sunday" in their first regular-season game at the Coliseum since '79. The Rams will "wear white uniforms for home games this season," while they will "wear throwbacks against the Seahawks and in one other game." The Rams are "expected to roll out new uniforms" for the '19 season, when they are "scheduled to move into a new stadium in Inglewood" (L.A. TIMES, 9/16).
