New Michigan Int'l Speedway President Brenner Open To Variety Of Events At Venue

New Michigan Int'l Speedway President Rick Brenner yesterday said that he "won’t overlook any idea 'that makes sense' to the speedway and the region," leaving open the possibility of a college football game or the return of IndyCar to the venue, according to Mike Brudenell of the DETROIT FREE PRESS. Brenner, who officially starts next Monday, "most recently served more than 10 years as president of DSF Sports and Entertainment, the company that owns" the Double-A Eastern League New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Brenner "has no experience in motorsports administration or marketing." But he said that his approach to NASCAR racing and fans at MIS "will be similar" to his work in baseball. Brenner: "I’ll do everything in getting out and mixing with people. A big part of my focus will be on fans and fan interaction and making it an overall experience the best it can be for people who come to the track." In the past 10 years at MIS, race attendance for the June and August NASCAR events has "dipped dramatically, from more than 120,000 fans at each race weekend to 85,000-90,000 tops the past few years." Asked about the use of MIS for other events, Brenner said, "If it makes (sense) for the area, the track and for everyone involved, it’s worth looking at." Brenner said he has "not spoken" to former track president Roger Curtis since his appointment. Brenner: "I’d really rather just move forward in our conversations. I have not met with him. I’d certainly be happy to in the future. We’ll see where that goes" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 9/13). In Detroit, David Goricki notes Curtis was "challenged with trying to bring more fans to NASCAR weekends" as attendance "dropped dramatically" (DETROIT NEWS, 9/13).
