Bay Area Columnists Discuss Culture Within 49ers Organization After Latest Arrest

Recently released 49ers TE Bruce Miller this week became the latest player associated with the team arrested for an act of violence, and there is a “lack of leadership in this organization where there’s no set standard" as to how players should behave, according to the San Jose Mercury News' Tim Kawakami. It is unknown who the coach or exec is "who says, 'This is how a 49er behaves.'" Kawakami: "It's not Trent Baalke, I guarantee you that. It's not Jed York, I guarantee you that. It might have been Jim Harbaugh. They fired him, and Chip Kelly just got there.” The S.F. Chronicle’s Ann Killion said York “has to take responsibility.” There currently is "no standard, and that’s one of the problems.” Kawakami: “There has never been a 49ers Code of Behavior. They’ve avoided that. They don’t want it in print, because what happens if (former 49ers LB) Aldon Smith gets in trouble and Trent Baalke loves him and wants him to be on the team.” Kawakami added, "This is where they are, this is their culture, this is why it keeps happening over and over again.” He cited a "lack of accountability from the top to the bottom” within the organization. Killion said, “I’ve gotten the strong impression that it’s not that big a deal to (Baalke) what guys do off the field.” Kawakami: “You don’t build football teams with choir boys, and some of that is true. But what they’ve done is they’ve acquired these sketchy personalities ... and they’ve never said, 'This is the line, this is who we are,' because they don’t want a line. They don’t want to be held to that because what if their best player crosses the line?” But CSNBayArea.com's Matt Maiocco said, “It’s not just a 49ers issue, it’s a league-wide issue” (“Sports Talk Live,” CSN Bay Area, 9/6).
