Marketplace Roundup

In Chicago, Lewis Lazare noted a new ad campaign highlighting the U.S. Open dubbed "You In?" began running on Monday featuring a "series of fast-paced TV commercials, made more so by high-energy musical underscoring." The spots offer "glimpses" of Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The spots, via McGarryBowen, Chicago, also "employ a bit of pointed visual humor to suggest that the 'out' crowd are real losers." Beyond the TV ads, the new campaign includes a digital takeover in Times Square, where "responses to the question 'You In?' will be posted on no fewer than six billboards" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 8/30).

BLENDING IN: Serena Williams spoke with ESPN’s Hannah Storm, Mary Joe Fernandez and Brad Gilbert following her first round victory last night. Regarding Williams wearing tight black sleeves during the match, Gilbert asked, "A few tennis players and a lot of NBA players (are wearing the sleeves). Is that helping the arm at all?” Storm then asked, “Or is it fashion?” Williams: “It's fashion. ... It was a part of the design, but it also helps keep my elbow warm so I don't have to use my elbow so much if my shoulder (is hurting)" ("U.S. Open," ESPN, 8/30).

FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK: THE STREET's Brian Sozzi noted Under Armour looks like it is about to make a "big commitment" to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson next year. In an Instagram post on Friday, Johnson "notified his 64 million-plus followers that he would debut a host of new swag" in early '17 backed by UA. For men, the line "will include hoodies, shirts, pants, hats, bags and a training shoe loosely called 'Rock Delta'" that he has been "testing out for months." Also, UA is betting the actor's "star power and subsequent ability to sell clothes doesn't just extend" to men. Per the Instagram post, a line of women's clothes "will drop too" (THESTREET.com, 8/27).
