Warriors Switch Flagship Radio Station To KGMZ-FM Beginning This Season

The Warriors have "ended their 32-year run" with KNBR-AM and signed a multiyear deal to make KGMZ-FM its flagship station beginning this season, according to Tim Kawakami of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. This is a "major move for the franchise," as it moves the team off of KNBR's "monster signal and tradition." A switch from KNBR has "been in the works" since several Warriors execs -- including co-Owner Joe Lacob and President & COO Rick Welts -- became "infuriated when KNBR moved several Warriors playoff games this spring to a sister station in order to broadcast Giants games." Twelve of the Warriors' 24 playoff games this past season were not broadcast on KNBR "due to Giants conflicts." Eight additional games during either the preseason or regular season "were moved." The Warriors will "immediately have priority" at KGMZ over the A's, which also counts KGMZ as its flagship. Sources said that there "is a slight chance they could move a Warriors game to another station only if the A's are playing a major playoff game at the same time." Long-time play-by-play announcer Tim Roye will "remain on the call for their games" on KGMZ, but the status of analyst Tom Tolbert was not addressed in a release announcing the move. Tolbert hosts a daily talk show on KNBR, and sources said that the Warriors and KGMZ have "informed KNBR that they would like to have him continue to do the games but it's up to KNBR and Tolbert to decide if that's workable." The Warriors-KGMZ deal is expected to take the team through the '18-19 season, which is also "slated to be the final season in Oakland." That means the Warriors can "re-set this radio situation again before the inaugural season for the new Chase Center" (MERCURYNEWS.com, 8/25).

SHOW OF STRENGTH: In San Jose, Anthony Slater notes some fans "voiced their concern about the potential radio strength" of KGMZ, which "doesn't envelope the area as strongly as KNBR." KGMZ Program Dir Don Kollins said that is something the station "is working on," and it has already established affiliates with KRTY-FM in San Jose and KUIC-FM for northern California (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 8/26).
